Anna Cockerille's Blog Post

Anna, I completely agreed with you when you said that the concept behind
Twitter was ridiculous. I just did not see the point in constantly posting
complaints, joys, sorrows, questions, and relationship problems on a social
media website. A few years ago, I came around and created a Twitter account and
after using Twitter for a few weeks I fell in love with it. I could not stay
off Twitter. Now I have slowed down a bit but a couple of years ago I was
addicted. Twitter is great! Happy tweeting!

What did I learn for Anthony Capps?
In the video "Project Based Learning Pt. 1," I learned that projects can be used to learn rather than used for testing. Projects are great for testing but also good for learning new things. According to Capps, Project based learning is successful when there is an authentic audience, when the students are interested, when the project is centered around the community, and when the project has state approved content. In the "Project Based Learning Pt. 2" video, Capps says that everything will not go well in Project Based Learning. I agree with Capps because, like he said, parents will not always be in compliance with all projects. Project based learning is meaningful. It creates a fun environment in the classroom while learning. I plan to use project based learning in the classroom for learning and testing purposes.
In the video "iCurio," I learned that iCurio is a search engine that pulls media such as, photos, videos, and documents for kids that has been filtered for educational purposes. iCurio also also has a storage capacity that can be used for teachers and students. This allows the teachers and students to store valuable information. According to Capps, iCurio teaches virtual organization which is good for both students and teachers. iCurio saves searches so that the student can come back to their work. iCurio has a directory feature for historical searching purposes. iCurio has a large span of users beginning in elementary school and ending in high school. From watching the video, iCurio seems like a very beneficial searching method to use in the classroom.
In the "Discovery Ed" video, I learned that Discovery Ed develops illustration with words. This makes it easier for a student to learn. Discovery Ed covers subjects such as history and science. Discovery Ed is also used for student searches to enhance their research. Teachers also use Discovery Ed to bring texts to life using reading and visuals.
In the "Anthony-Strange Tips for Teachers" video, I learned some tips to becoming a teacher. Some tip for teachers are that teachers should be learners. Teachers must be avid learners. Teachers should allow their work to be a fun experience. Teaching never ends and it is a constant process which can be rewarding. Teachers have to be flexible and able to get all students engaged in learning.
In the video "Don't Teach Tech" I learned that technology is everywhere and necessary to learn in the classroom to improve learning. With the world being so tech savvy, it is important for students to learn how to use this technology. Teachers should design projects and embed technology within the project rather than flat out teaching the students. According to Capps, do not teach technology, instead, introduce technology by giving them the opportunity to learn how to use technology on their own. Technology is fun to use so the students will willingly use it, therefore, the teacher won't have to force them to learn it by teaching them. I agree with technology in the classroom because it opens creativity among the students giving them a chance to learn in a fun way.
In the "Additional Thoughts about Lessons" video, I learned that there a four components for teaching. The Lessons have to fit in the year. The units have to be divided into how much can get done in a week. Lastly, the daily lesson. How much can be taught in a day? How much can the students learn in that day?

Blog Post #5 PLNs
I started my PLN through Symbaloo. I started by creating an account and then browsing the website to get a feel for what I was going to be doing on Symbaloo for my PLN. While browsing the website, I noticed that the icons that were currently on my newly made PLN were icons I would have created myself, so it was a great start. Of course, further along in the semester my PLN will grow, but now is great for just getting started. My PLN is currently equipped with necessities, such as, YouTube, Gmail, Google, Twitter and many more search engines and great websites. There are also other icons on my PLN that I personally use for shopping such as Walmart, Target, Ebay, and Amazon, just to name a few. There are entertainment icons on my PLN, such as, Netflix, Skype, and Facebook. Personal Learning Networks help future and current teachers and students learn new, exciting things on their own. PLNs give the students and teachers freedom. Creativity flows through PLNs. PLNs are a great source of learning. You can pin any website on your own PLN and begin learning. PLNs are great!

Interesting post! It sounds like you enjoy working on the farm with your dad and working with the cattle. It's cool that you own cows and cattle while only in the 8th grade. This is overall a good post, just work on your punctuation.

Blog Post #4 Asking Questions.
Asking questions is very important in teaching and learning. According to Maryellen Weimer in the "Three Ways to Ask Better Questions" article, there are three ways to asking better questions. These three ways are, preparing questions, playing with questions, and preserving questions. The first way to asking better questions is to prepare questions. When a teacher prepares questions for classroom discussion it makes learning more effective. I agree with Weimer because when she says that writing out questions makes questions clear. This is true because when you write out the question you can add or subtract words from the question, therefore, making a precise question. The second way to asking better questions is to play with questions. The teacher is playing with the question when it is in various places like on a power point or on the whiteboard. Playing with the questions makes the student want to write it down because it is seen often. This also allows the student to ponder the question so that they could develop a well thought out answer. The last way to asking better questions is to preserve good questions. Sometimes students ask really good questions. Being a teacher, you know what a good question is and a good teacher would preserve that students question and use it in another class's discussion.
In Andie Stix's video "Open Ended Questions" she talks about effective ways to answering open ended questions. Teachers ask really good questions. Teachers then question themselves on how they can turn that good question into an open ended question which calls for deep thought and open mindedness. There are a few ways to asking open ended questions such as saying "explain in detail," "generate a list," and asking "for what reasons." These are all great ways to asking open ended questions. When asking the question "why?" it makes the student want to generate more of a response. This makes for a thoughtful answer with great detail.
According to Ben Johnson in the "The Right Way to Ask Their Own Questions" article, questions are asked by teachers to check the understanding of the student. The only way to know if a concept is taught to a student the teacher must ask questions. Whether or not the student answers correctly depends on the teacher.

Blog Post #3 What is Peer Editing?
According to the narrator of the video, "Peer Editing", peer editing is "making suggestions, comments, or changes to improve writing done by someone around your age." Like the narrator said in the video, it is a good idea to "stay positive, give compliments, and make suggestions." I agree with the narrator of this video. The best way to approach peer editing is with positivity. Staying positive while peer editing another person's work is essential because you would want positivity from the person peer editing your own work. Another good approach to peer editing is giving compliments. I would like my peer editor to give me compliments on what I do correct but still give me the truth on my writing. The last good approach to peer editing is making suggestions. I would like my peer editor to make suggestions to help me improve my work.
The correct way to edit blog posts in EDM 310 is to thoroughly read the blog post. After reading the blog post, give compliments, and make suggestions to the writer to improve the blog post. The peer editor should check for grammatical errors, sentence fragments, and any other errors with writing. The peer editor should also make suggestions to brighten the writing such as, "It's a nice day." Instead, say "It's a beautiful day." The importance of peer editing is to help improve the work of the writer. Peer editing helps students to see mistakes that the writer does not see.

What Will Teaching in the 21st Century Be Like?
1. The Mr. Dancealot video is about a social dance class that gives students the basics about different types of dances such as waltz, swing, and tango. This video gives background information on different dances and shows students how to do the dances. I do agree with the conclusion of this movie. After the students learn the dances they are tested with an open book and open note exam. In order to test a student's knowledge on how well they know information, they need to be tested. Although, an open note and open book exam is only testing the students on how good a note taker they are, and how well they can find answers in a book.
2. I. What teachers provide?
a. content
b. facts
c. dates
d. research
II. Social Media
a. blogs
b. facebook
c. twitter
III. What does creation mean today?
a. blogging
b. podcasting
c. animating
d. planning
IV. Reliable sources?
a. google
b. delicious
c. wikipedia
d. blogs
V. How do we mange technology at school?
a. make sure it's relevant
b challenging
c. engaging
VI. Entertainment is?
a. passive
b. active
c. for enjoyment
d. for learning.
I agree with Kevin Roberts. Teaching with the use of technology is prevalent and will be even more prevalent in the future. Teachers should know how to use technology in order to help advance classroom learning. This will affect me as a future educator because I am aware of the importance of technology. Technology will be used in my future classroom to make learning more fun and understanding.
3. The Networked Student
I have a negative viewpoint of this video. I do not agree with the theory of connectivism. I prefer the teacher teach me what I need to know rather than finding what I need to know, completely, on my own. Gaining knowledge on your own is fine, but may be difficult while trying to figure out what your teacher wants from you. This now forms the question "Why does the networked student even need a teacher?" The student needs a teacher for guidance on how to find this knowledge. Without a teacher a student can become lost and confused.
4. Harness Your Students' Digital Smarts
Thesis: The thesis is using technology to connect students to the world.
I agree with Vicki Davis' argument that paper and pencil is not the only way to learn. Some students learn better by using technology. Davis encourages her students to be thinkers and I totally agree with that concept. As a future educator, I would want my students to be thinkers. Not only do I want to teach them, I also want to learn from them.
5. Who is ahead in the learning race?
In my opinion, the elementary students are ahead in the learning race. The elementary students have the resources at their finger tips to learn how to use technology. These students use Mac books to make iMovies and create blogs. They also have advantages in using audio. I noticed in the video that the graduate and undergraduate students do not have all the resources the elementary students have. This makes the elementary students more advanced than the graduate and undergraduate students.
6. Flipping the classroom.
Flipping the classroom is definitely new to me. The technology used for this concept was not used while I was in elementary, middle, nor high school, although, it was available. No teachers used this new idea of Flipping the Classroom while I was growing up. This approach is a good approach, although, I would not use it. I would not use this approach because I know half, if not more, of my future high school students would not use it. Therefore, this would be a waste of my time. This approach really depends on the teacher. A syllabus approach can work just as good as the Flipping the Classroom approach. Page numbers for lessons can be put on the syllabus so that the students can look over the material and come in class prepared to ask questions and learn.
